Patrice Mousseau

Patrice Mousseau is the Founder and CEO of Satya Organic Skin Care. A member of Fort William First Nation and a former journalist, Patrice became a conscious entrepreneur from the basic need to help her baby girl, Esme.
Her daughter was suffering from eczema and scratching her arms and legs bloody. The doctor prescribed her a steroid cream, but Patrice felt there had to be another way.

“I started looking into existing medical research, traditional medicine, as well as the latest studies coming out of universities. Soon, I was experimenting in my kitchen crockpot and developed a balm that cleared Esme’s eczema up in two days. Satya Organic Eczema Relief was born!”

Satya Organic Eczema Relief™ is a proven effective skin formula that soothes severely dry, itchy, and inflamed skin from persistent conditions like eczema. More than a moisturizer, and without topical steroids, Satya provides a fragrance-free, Health Canada approved natural relief for stressed skin.

Satya means “higher truth” in Sanskrit, and Patrice believes her greatest entrepreneurial strengths are sustainability and innovation.

Satya is carbon neutral with the Coastal First Nations’ Great Bear Rainforest initiative, and Patrice pays her six part-time employees a Vancouver living wage as, like Patrice, they’re all single moms and caregivers.

In partnership with the Plastic Bank, each purchase of the fully refillable and reusable Satya Stick helps pay people in developing countries to pull plastic from sensitive waterways, fighting poverty and ocean plastics at the same time.

“I’m proud to have made a huge impact at SheEO Summit by interviewing and sharing Satya’s story with Prime Minister Trudeau in March, encouraging his government to cut the red tape when it comes to supporting women entrepreneurs.

Through the story of Satya, I showed him what’s possible when you give Indigenous women with no formal business background the chance to do business their way. With the right supports, women can make a huge impact in the lives of thousands, amplifying their initial goals tenfold, making our world a better place.”

In 2020, Patrice was awarded the BC Indigenous Entrepreneur CANIE Award from the Innovators and Entrepreneurs Foundation!

Loan Client Q&A

Q. What has your WeBC loan enabled you to do in your business?

Through this loan, WeBC has helped fulfill growing demand through inventory run funding.

Q. What other services has Women’s Enterprise Centre provided you with?

WeBC has helped me with supportive conversations, and offers of help when I needed it most.

Q. What inspired you to take the leap and start your own business?

I didn’t intend on being a business owner. I’d developed a product out of the crockpot in my kitchen that so many other Moms were finding relief from, it just took off.

Once I learned that business could focus on making the world a better place and improving peoples lives over and above profit, I knew it was time to take Satya Organic to the next level.

Q. What are your goals for the business?

The world needs Satya. Eczema is an auto-immune illness that wreaks havoc on our largest organ, the skin. And it’s on the rise: In some regions around the world it’s doubled in the last 10-15 years. ⁣⁣ Globally, about 20% of the world’s population under 8 years old will suffer from eczema at some point. Especially people of colour.

At the same time, doctors continue to prescribe steroid creams as a first line of treatment, in spite of the risks, like topical steroid withdrawal, thinning of the skin, burning, infection, glaucoma or blindness, unwanted hair growth or skin discoloration.

With so many environmental toxins around us, we want more people to experience relief through simple, pure, and effective skincare—that’s backed by science.

We’re deeply honoured and encouraged that Selma Blair recently raved about Satya Organic as a “magic balm” for her post-chemo skin.
